Extreme Elasticity for Concrete That Expands and Contracts

Mason and Greater Cincinnati experience drastic seasonal temperature shifts, ranging from sub-zero winter mornings to blistering 95 degree summer afternoons. When concrete slabs expand and contract under these conditions, rigid coatings like basic epoxy can develop micro fractures, delaminate, or flake off as the slab moves underneath them.

Polyurea is renowned for its elastic elongation properties. It bends with the slab rather than resisting it, ensuring your garage floor coating remains bonded for life. Combined with full broadcast color flakes and a crystal-clear polyaspartic topcoat, you get maximum toughness and enduring aesthetic beauty in a single system.

    The Flexibility Advantage

Why a Flexible Basecoat Matters on Ohio Concrete

    Moves With the Slab

Concrete expands and contracts with every temperature swing. Polyurea stretches up to three times its original length without cracking, so the coating stays bonded as the slab breathes.

    Deep Capillary Bond

Its low viscosity lets polyurea soak into the pores opened by diamond grinding, forming a root system that locks the coating to the concrete instead of just sitting on top.

This flexibility is also why we rely on polyurea mender to repair cracks and joints before any basecoat goes down. The same elastic chemistry that handles slab movement fills and bridges cracks without becoming brittle. You can see how it fits into our full installation process on the residential garage coatings overview.

Polyurea Garage Floor Questions & Answers

Why is polyurea superior to standard epoxy as a basecoat?

Polyurea has an elongation rate of up to 300%, meaning it expands and contracts with the concrete slab as temperatures fluctuate from winter sub-zero freezes to 95-degree summer days. Standard epoxy is rigid and brittle, which is why it cracks and lifts when the slab breathes.

How does polyurea achieve such high adhesion to concrete?

Polyurea has a very low viscosity during application, which allows it to wick deep into the open concrete pores created by our diamond grinders. It chemically bonds to the silicate structure of the concrete, creating a mechanical root system that cannot be pulled up by hot tires.

Can polyurea withstand road salt and winter chemicals?

Yes. Polyurea is completely impervious to calcium chloride, road salt, magnesium chloride, motor oil, transmission fluid, and gasoline. Winter brine that eats bare concrete sits harmlessly on the surface until you hose it away.

Is polyurea the same thing as polyaspartic?

They are closely related. Polyaspartic is actually a modified form of polyurea engineered for slower gel times and UV stability, which makes it ideal as a clear topcoat. We pair a flexible polyurea basecoat with a polyaspartic clear coat to get the best of both: deep adhesion and elasticity underneath, hardness and UV resistance on top.

My garage slab has several large cracks. Will polyurea bridge them?

Polyurea basecoat flexes with moving cracks, but active structural cracks still need to be routed and mended first with our polyurea crack filler. We evaluate every slab during your free estimate and tell you honestly which cracks require repair before coating.
